RFID in Vehicle Tires

“The use of RFID in vehicle tires tracks tire lifecycle and prevents vehicle accidents by ensuring timely maintenance schedules and notifying directly to the driver.”

Use of technology in automotive industry has been the biggest hit of 21st century. In 1994, when Denso Wave, Japan had a partnership with Toyota, it used to make automotive parts for them. The movement of parts through the assembly line became difficult and they needed an efficient way to track all the parts, identify all the parts correctly and meet safety guidelines. They asked their engineer Masahiro Hara to come up with a foolproof method to solve this problem. This is the story behind how QR codes (quick response) codes were invented but that was in 1994. The QR technology at present has become a revolution nearly 30 years after its invention. It is everywhere.  The point is that technology has always played an important role in automotive industry, be it part manufacturing, part assembly, quality check, final production or consumer safety.

Use of various IoT sensors and devices in cyber physical systems has given rise to automation and additive manufacturing. You can use various smart sensors, actuators and software systems to monitor, control and optimize physical machinery or machine parts ensuring safety and efficiency altogether. Use of RFID technology in automotive is one such example where technology is playing a transformative role. E-tires are a perfect use case of RFID in automotive industry.

Radio Frequency Identification as an AIDC technology is capable of wirelessly identifying objects with unique identifiers and automatic data collection. The technology being quite accurate in remote identification and sensing applications finds great use in automotive industry, particularly in parts tracking.

RFID in Vehicle Tires: Tire Tracking with RFID

As I mentioned above, RFID finds great applications in automotive industry and tracking auto parts and sensing applications are some of the unique highlights of RFID in automotive industry. When embedded in vehicle tires, RFID tags (UHF passive RFID tags) allow you complete visibility into tire movement and installation while in production ensuring correct assembly of right tire sets on right vehicle. This ensures that the vehicle just manufactured is safe for customers. But that is not all.

RFID plays a far greater role in post sale and post production. Tire tracking with RFID tags is not just limited to automotive manufacturing unit but it also allows customers to monitor the entire tyre lifecycle.

Tires are what move the vehicle, apart from the engine. These are the most exposed parts and passenger safety totally depends on tire wear and tear and tire pressure. Use of RFID tire tags in vehicle tires can enable an enormous amount of data collection on tire lifecycle and maintenance schedules. RFID based sensors can measure tire pressure all the times as well as the effects of heat and rain on tires. RFID tagged tires can help with digitalization and big data.

Artificial Intelligence, Predictive Analytics and RFID in Vehicle Tires

RFID is an AIDC technology. When it starts sharing data over the internet to other CPSs and IoT based intelligence systems in the automotive industry, it enables 100% visibility, monitoring and optimization of machine parts as well as automotive parts. The vast amount of data collection through RFID in automotive parts especially tires can be cleaned and analyzed by artificial intelligence and machine learning tools such as Predictive Analytics. It can be leveraged to chart a future estimation based on past results. Many automotive industries have invested heavily in cyber physical systems keeping up with the Industry 4.0 targets and RFID plays an important role here. Not just tires, RFID is capable of streamlining the entire track and trace needs within the automotive industry, enabling a far greater degree of process control and growth.

When the data collected on tires, from production to post production, the entire tire lifecycle through various testing methods as per industry standards is put through artificial intelligence algorithms, you get greater insights into tire lifecycle vis-à-vis yield points, maintenance and corrective measures that can be implemented to perfect the final product.

The Benefits of RFID in Vehicle Tires

Use of UHF RFID tire tags in vehicle tires has plenty benefits first hand. It gives you a consolidated data on tire assembly and inspection and initial testing. Apart from that, RFID ensures tire lifecycle tracking and management.

Let’s see some of highlights of RFID in tire tracking:

  1. 1. RFID tags and sensors in tire prevent vehicle accidents due to tire failure.
  2. 2. RFID tags and RFID reader allow quick identification of vehicle parts for assembly including tire assembly.
  3. 3. It ensures correct tire identification and tracking for assembly.
  4. 4. RFID allows the manufacturing units to collect plethora of data on tires vis-à-vis tire assembly, tire thread count, tire type, as well as tire testing results.
  5. 5. Use of AI and ML allows better understanding of the collected data with automatic insights and reports.
  6. 6. Predictive analytics allows a course correction and ensures safety of customers in long run. It also helps automotive industry with value creation and growth.
  7. 7. RFID tags on tires correctly measure VMT (Vehicle Miles Traveled) and give you necessary details on tire utilization and maintenance schedules.

To summarize, RFID technology allows a systemic tire assembly during production but it is equally important post production. RFID tire tags give you all the data you need on tires throughout the tire lifecycle. When an RFID tag is used as a sensor, it gives you detailed information on VMT and tire pressure and wear and tear, preventing road accidents and ensuring passenger safety. Use of AI and ML can benefit the automotive industry by making sense of all the data collected throughout the production and post production operations as well.
